Dr. Marita V. Tolentino-Reyes spent much of her professional life in medical education, specifically in Biochemistry and Genetics. She served as Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Manila from 2002 to 2005, University of the Philippines Faculty Regent in 2001 and Dean of the UP College of Medicine from 1988 to 1991. Dr. Reyes’ major turning point in her career was her very active involvement in research ethics. She became the Chairperson of the National Ethics Committee from 1996 to 2016 and the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board from 2006-2010. In 2017, Dr. Reyes was awarded by the Association of Philippine Medical Colleges in recognition of her achievements in Medical Education, and in 2016, by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development and Philippine Health Research Ethics Board in recognition of her exceptional contributions in pioneering the standardization of research ethics review in the country.
